Descriptif : Sarcopenia is associated with the loss of functional capacity and disability, thus also related to reductions in quality of life and higher morbidity and mortality, with an increased use of health resources. Physical activity has shown to be cornerstone in attenuating this loss of functional capacity associated to the ageing process. However, the optimal program to achieve the greatest benefits for each elder population is still unknown. The aim of the present study is to compare the effects of 2 multicomponent supervised exercise programs (6 weeks and 12 weeks) in 2 different socio-cultural contexts (Vitoria and Bordeaux) in community dwelling participants aged 70-100 years old who fulfil the EWGSOP (European Work Group on Sarcopenia in Older People) diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia in terms of functional and cognitive performance, quality of life, muscle mass, muscle functional imaging, biological markers and use of health resources. With this objective in mind, a randomised controlled trial will be performed: participants in the short supervised group (N=40) will benefit from 2 weekly group-based exercise sessions during 6 weeks whereas those in the long supervised group (N=40) will carry out a 12 weeks supervised exercise program. The intervention will be divided in 2 phases: one supervised (6 or 12 weeks) and another unsupervised/home-based (12 or 18 weeks). Follow-up will be done at weeks 0,6,12 and 24.
