Objectifs :
At the end of the course, PhD students will be able to:
- name 7 fundamental goals that can be fulfilled by scientific outreach
- identify relevant forms associated with each of these functions
- describe actions carried out within the university or elsewhere, which can serve as a reference for new personal projects

Programme :
Programme détaillé * : This training is a short one-hour webinar, online on the Zoom platform. It will address the essential questions you should ask yourself before embarking on an outreach project, and provide an opportunity to discuss with experienced people on the subject. To be able to exchange with other PhD students, we recommend that you have a stable connection and that you can activate your microphone.

This course is offered as part of the “Science with and for Society” program run by the université de Bordeaux, and led by a professional science communicator from TRACES association.

Why do we do scientific outreach?
Behind this question lies a multitude of different, sometimes contradictory, answers.
Understanding the functions that outreach can fulfill helps you knowing what choices you should do when embarking on a new activity with the public, and feel more legitimate and therefore more at ease in the actions you undertake.

After a short introduction to frame the subject of the webinar and define what “scientific outreach” is, participants will be divided into sub-groups to identify and discuss the different goals science communication can fulfill.

On the basis of these discussions, we will then spell out the different forms that scientific outreach can take, and highlight the contexts in which each is most relevant.

When possible, links will be made with examples of projects already in place at the university.

Méthode pédagogique :
The webinar is divided into a discussion phase in small groups and a presentation phase by the trainer.
Engaging in a discussion game at the start of the course helps to mobilize and verbalize participants' knowledge, so that it can be more easily added to and linked to what is presented during the presentation phases.
