Objectifs :
This will be a crash course in quantum theory that requires almost no prior knowledge
beyond high-school mathematics and an ability to draw and reason with simple pictures.
Based on the “little brother” (Quantum in Pictures [1]) of the the “Dodo book” (Picturing
Quantum Processes [2]), this course is aimed at two sets of doctoral students: 1) those who
want to learn a bit about quantum computing and related topics but have no prior exposure
to quantum theory, and 2) those who know quantum theory but have no prior exposure to
diagrammatic ways of thinking about quantum theory (“categorical quantum mechanics”),
pioneered by Bob Coecke and Samson Abramsky [3,4]. I hope this course will give the
students a sense of this way of thinking about quantum theory and will encourage a deeper
exploration of the topic [2].
The course will consist of six 2-hour lectures (CM) and three 2-hour exercise sessions (TD)
for a total duration equivalent to 24 HTD. It will last two weeks, with three lectures per week, and an exercise session at the end of every second lecture, i.e, one TD in the first week and two TD in the second week.
