The practice of mediation is conceived not simply as a means of transmitting knowledge, but as a balanced intercultural encounter and exchange, in the service of enlightened public debate and a responsible approach to research.
Offered as part of the University of Bordeaux's Sciences avec et pour la Société (SAPS / Science with and for society) label, and based on the challenges of CSTI (culture scientifique, technique et industrielle), this practical, interactive training course enables PhD students to acquire the rudiments and codes of scientific mediation. It focuses on understanding audiences, adapting discourse and postures, and emphasizing the importance of experience and the appropriateness of proposed formats. Programme : At a time when misinformation and alternative facts are invading the media, it is essential that society as a whole has access to scientific content and proven expertise in the field of research. This is one of the main challenges facing scientific culture today.
To achieve this, it is important that the specialists who produce this knowledge are able to give visibility to research even outside universities, while at the same time being confident and prepared when it comes to speaking out in public spaces and engaging in constructive dialogue with citizens. While communicating well in one's field of expertise, sharing research results effectively or interacting with different audiences are not innate skills, they can be acquired and reinforced.
Focus 1: CSTI / Mediation
Overview of CSTI: roles, locations, players, issues, links with SAPS...
Mediation activities: Objectives, types, methods, resources
Focus 2: The notion of experience for the public
What are we talking about? What does it involve? What does it contribute? What are the pitfalls?
What about interactions with scientists, others, materials, spaces, time and one's own experience?
Focus 3: The importance of knowing your audience
Who are they? Where are they? What are their questions, representations and levels of knowledge?
What are their expectations and demands? What do their attitudes reveal?
Focus 4: Handling the scientific message
How do you define a key message and choose the right words to deliver it?
What techniques can be used to make it accessible and effective, with a lasting impact?
How to play with time and rhythm to captivate your audience?
Focus 5: Building a mediation
How do you “tell” a story from a scientific subject?
How to harmonize form and content?
What formats should be used, and on what media?
What postures to adopt?
