Objectifs :
For your research studies you may need to access a Unix computer and be required to type strange lines to sort files, analyze data or orchestrate computations. Or, maybe you’re just curious about the possibilities offered by such a free operating system and how to handle it? As other operating systems, Unix can be operated with clicks on a mouse, but its power is unleashed only when using simple to complex commands entered in an old-school terminal window.
This two-sessions introduction is mainly aimed at beginner students on Unix systems, not knowing what a terminal is or hardly using a couple of basic commands. You’ll learn how to survive in the command jungle, by finding allies, reading error messages. To gain time you’ll also learn how to chain commands and use seemingly strange symbols and expressions (that will allow you to shine in dinners :-D ). You’ll learn how there’s more than one way to reach your goal.
This year we added 3 hours to the program to have time to write some shell scripts. This is a skill that will allow you to sort out and extract relevant data in text files resulting from simulations or scientific experiments for instance, though this can also be done by resorting to a programming language (such as Python, but this is not in the scope of this training).
Running jobs on a computing cluster is out of the scope of this training, but in order to run such jobs, attending to the present training is kind of a first stepping stone.

Three 3-hours sessions with the extra possibility to train on a dedicated online exercise platform.
