Objectifs :
At the end of the training course, PhD students will be able to:
- Name 7 fundamental goals that can be fulfilled by scientific outreach
- Identify relevant forms associated with each of these functions
- Describe actions carried out within the university or elsewhere, which can serve as a reference for new personal projects.

Programme :
Why do we engage in science communication?

This training course will take the form of a one-hour webinar, available online on the Zoom platform. It will address key questions to ask before embarking on a science communication project, followed by an opportunity to discuss the topic with professionals in the field. Behind this seemingly innocuous question lies a multitude of different, even contradictory, answers. Understanding the functions that science communication can fulfill allows us to know what choices need to be made when embarking on a new activity with audiences, to feel more legitimate and to be more comfortable in the actions we take.

After an introduction to frame the subject and define the essential terms, PhD students will be divided into subgroups to identify and discuss the different functions that science communication can fulfill. Based on these discussions, we will discuss the challenges of science communication in a group setting. We will then be able to talk about the different possible formats and in which contexts each one is most relevant. When possible, links will be made to examples of projects already implemented at the University of Bordeaux.

This training course is offered and led by the team behind the University of Bordeaux's “Science with and for Society” label.

Pré-requis :
To participate in the training course, you must have a stable internet connection, be able to activate your microphone and camera and, if possible, be on a computer.

Méthode pédagogique :
Interactive, participatory, and collaborative method.
The webinar is divided into small groups discussion phase and a presentation phase by the trainer.
Engaging in a discussion game at the beginning of the training session helps to mobilize and verbalize the PhD students' knowledge, making it easier to supplement and relate it to what is presented during the presentation phases.
The trainer will use Zoom's chat function to engage PhD students and encourage discussion
