Objectifs :
At the end of the training, PhD students will be able to:
- Cite and describe several classic public-facing science communication formats
- Explain the advantages and limitations of these different formats
- Describe actions carried out within the university or elsewhere, which can serve as a reference for new personal projects.

Programme :
What outreach activities can be implemented in the laboratory when welcoming the public?

This training course will take the form of a one-hour webinar, online on the Zoom platform. It will address key questions to ask before embarking on a science outreach project and then provide an opportunity to discuss the subject with professionals. Through examples and experience sharing, we will look at different actions that can be implemented in the laboratory depending on your constraints, audiences and personal objectives.

After a short introduction to frame the topic of the webinar and list the most common “public” formats, PhD students will be able to discuss examples to see what they believe are the strengths and limitations of each format. Based on these discussions and the questions they raise, we will talk with a researcher from the University of Bordeaux who has set up scientific outreach activities in their laboratory, to better understand how this was organized, the successes and difficulties encountered, or a professional who has participated in activities led by the university.

This training is offered and led by the team behind the University of Bordeaux's “Science with and for Society” label.

Pré-requis :
- To participate in the training, you must have a stable internet connection, be able to activate your microphone and camera and, if possible, use a computer.
- Participation in the webinar “Issues and formats in science communication at the university” and “Drawing your research: why and how?” is a plus, but not mandatory.

Méthode pédagogique :
Interactive, participatory, and collaborative method.
The webinar is divided into small groups discussion phase, followed by a framing phase led by the trainer and finally a discussion phase with a researcher who has implemented public outreach activities at the laboratory.
Engaging in a discussion at the beginning of the training session allows PhD students to mobilize and verbalize their knowledge, making it easier to supplement and relate it to what is presented during the presentation phases and generate relevant questions and answers during the final phase.
The trainer will use Zoom's chat function to engage PhD students and encourage discussion.
