Objectifs :
- To develop communicative competence in English for research and scientific writing
- To make PhD students more autonomous in the writing up of their research and in English for research and publication purposes so that they can integrate their disciplinary community and gain in communicative competence in an English as a Lingua Franca environment
- To raise awareness of the norms and conventions of the research article in their field
- To analyse the rhetorical strategies and linguistic characteristics of the research article

Programme :
This doctoral workshop will focus on the writing up of research by analysing examples of publications.
PhD students will be familiarized with the rhetorical strategies and typical language forms used in the research article with a special focus on the “introduction” section.
For the first part of the workshop, PhD students should bring an article published by an author in their field as a model so that they can reflect on the structure of articles in their research field and the typical linguistic features. Special attention will be paid to the introduction section and the common language clusters used to establish the centrality of the research question, to refer to the literature, to indicate a research gap and to announce the objective of the study.
For the second part of the workshop, PhD students will write a short “mini-introduction” which will then be analysed in class in order to obtain feedback from both their peers and also the teacher. Grammar points of interest, typical errors and register will be discussed.

Pré-requis :
- Minimum B1 level in English.
- Participation in both parts of the workshop is mandatory in order to validate the training hours.
- PhD students should bring a research article published by an author in their research field.

Méthode pédagogique :
- The workshop is based on active learning, analysis of example texts, micro-tasks to be carried out individually, in pairs or small groups.
- Oral interaction, reflection and discussion in groups before reporting back to the group as a whole.

- PhD students will gain in autonomy in English for research and the communicative strategies used in writing up research articles.
